Digitizing Microfilm Virginia Freedman Project

Virgina Gov. Tim Kaine is set to update Virginia’s initiative to  compile the records of black Virginians whose family history was affected by slavery and racism electronically.

The Virginia Freedmen Project so far has collected microfilm from the United States National Archives and digitized them to make genealogical records more accessible to African-American families.

The center has worked with volunteers to take the National Archives materials and making them available electronically.

Although this is all fine and good, Virginia should have requested a budget from President Obama for microfilm scanning. A company like this scanning company in Florida, would have transferred the film to digital images very quickly for an inexpensive cost. this scanning company would have digitized the microfilm and setup a retrieval system for them. It’s a shame in this economy that volunteers had to be used. Contact us today
